First Steps Pistol Orientation

Although this class meets or exceeds the qualifications set forth in Florida Statute 790.06 (2)(h) for qualifications needed for a Concealed Carry License we HIGHLY recommend taking the Basic Pistol Course if you plan to apply for a CCL.

Course Goal
To provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely own and use a SPECIFIC MODEL OF PISTOL.

Course Description
NRA FIRST Steps Pistol is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type for classes of four or fewer students. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular pistol model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, FIRST Steps Course completion certificate. Course Length
This course typically takes 3 hours of classroom instruction in addition to 1-2 hours of range work.

Course Cost
The current cost is $65. This covers all course materials that are used for classroom and range portion of training. This does not cover ammunition or gun usage if using a facility firearm.

What you need to bring

For this class, you will need the following items:

  • A working and reliable firearm – UNLOADED AND CASED. A firearm can be provided for the range portion. 
  • 50 rounds of ammunition – DO NOT BRING AMMUNITION INTO THE CLASSROOM. PLEASE LEAVE IT IN YOUR VEHICLE 
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Weather-appropriate clothing and footwear
  • A gun cleaning kit
  • A notebook and pen
  • Water and quiet snacks
  • A lunch
